Crosstalk appropriates and transforms live news media content. Physical it consists of twenty sounders; hand-built enclosures containing custom electronics designed and fabricated by Eckert. These machines harvest news feeds and convert the messages to Morse code (a series of long and short beeps). Every half-hour, these beeps are modified to simultaneously vary in pitch. Standard Morse code conveys the real-time texts while tonal variations of the coded message concurrently capture music. The text and the sound of the encoded message thus carry multiple meanings. The resulting visual and aural output juxtapose the content of collected text with the musical compositions into which they are remade.
